The Face of the Defacer

I have always been irked by Romeos who scribble names of girls they fancy, painters who imagine elevator walls as their personal drawing boards or perverts who draw dirty diagrams on the toilet doors. Not to mention the scores who deface monuments, markets, buses and trains. In my guest post on the multi-faceted Rachna Parmar’s blog ‘Rachna Says’ I vent my ire and ask you three questions.

Why do people who scribble on elevator walls, buses and trains shy away from doing so when they are at a swanky airport or a foreign location?
Is scribbling and defacing exclusive to men or do women also indulge in it?
What can be done to curb the menace?

  1. I have noticed that people who do so do it on trees and walls and public monuments, not in posh places where there are CCTV's and a huge crowd which can descend on them.

    1. Then perhaps there has to be the fear of being fined or punished as a deterrent.

  2. What can be done is , if caught CUT OFF THEIR HANDS..

  3. I think people refrain from scribbling while in airports because of the subconscious sense of being under the watch all the time. In today's times of highest security arrangements, maybe the sense of being in a security-sensitive zone such as an airport prevents people from getting into trouble.

Also, maybe the mind-boggling formalities at an aiport take up most of the time of anyone who may otherwise be tempted to scribble. :P

But I've also noticed that even the posh shopping malls dont have graffiti. Probably just because it seems there's always an eye on you just like at an airport. And at foreign locations, well, people must be scared of breaking the laws which they actually don't know about.

I don't know whether women indulge in it too.

About how to curb it, I think surveillance and then imposing a fine can be an effective solution. Because these days, what seems to hurt a person most is being made to part with his money. :-)

    1. Yes, the Delhi metro is so far clean..no tobacco or paan stains. Also no political party should be allowed to put posters on trees and walls.....the message has to come from the top.

  4. well, i personally feel that nothing can be done unless we start developing a sense that called "civic sense" and unfortunately we Indian lacks into it...
regarding not doing it at airports or similar places, so just to let know that people are doing it there too but only in toilets like lonely places which somehow indicates that those who love doing graffiti looks for places where they can use their creativity in peace.....and snatching their peace at such places is next to impossible.....

  6. graffiti is “unauthorized writing or drawing..." some European places have some great pop art in the form of graffiti:)

coming to the post, we Indians have very weak laws...we need laws like cutting off hands, balls, taking away license, etc. for the complete elimination of all kinds of crimes. PERIOD

    1. I was basically perturbed by the defacing of my apartment elevators...and it led to this post.

    2. definitely, your apartment elevators are yours alone and nobody should be allowed to deface it...i was talking about graffiti in general - it looks good with public messages on public walls and places of art and inspiration.

Personally, as a school kid, i was very disturbed with 'dirty' drawings etched out on our school desk with a compass and then at the Elephanta caves, i had seen horrible stuff..thats not graffiti art, thats crap!

  8. Sure, I will do so. I am amazed to hear that DPS RKP had defaced toilets. I doubt if it is creative.....surely not in the elevators. Some readers have commented that graffiti is very creative. Perhaps, but there has to be a place for creativity. One cant display creativity on public property.

Yes, parenting plays an imp role.
